Castle Improvements

Castle improvements

CastleResidents will notice some changes at the Castle in the coming months, as scaffolding starts to go up for the first part of a repair programme which kicks off this month. Visitors will still be able to access the building. The works will not affect visitor's tour inside the Castle as nearly all the works are external. However, access to the pathway around the outside of the Castle will be restricted and during most of the work there will be no access to the Castle Tower. This is because the whole Tower roof area is to be replaced.

"Every effort will be made to coordinate works so that there is as little disruption to the normal everyday running of the Castle and there will be no work taking place at weekends or Bank Holidays" said Councillor Bruce Boughton, Portfolio holder for Regeneration and Community Development. "The work is expected to last for fourteen weeks in total and is essential to help make the building weatherproof and will be a major step forward in caring for and preserving the Castle in the long term. We hope everyone in Tamworth will appreciate that this work has to be carried out so that the Castle can continue to stand as one of our best loved historic monuments, and join us in celebrating the fact that our rich heritage is being conserved for the future."

Essential repairs will be undertaken to selected parts of the building, including the Tower Roof, the parapet walls above the North range, the paved area in front of the entrance, parts of the herringbone wall and the complete renovation of the seventeenth century footbridge within the South range. Scaffolding will cover most of the tower and around the exterior walls of the Castle to the side that overlooks Market Street.
